THE Australian Tax Office has brought seven charges against a man accused of lodging false Business Activity Statements totalling $339,463.
Trevor John Stewart, 37, of Carinya Close, Toronto, was committed to face trial over the charges yesterday. He has not yet entered pleas. In a brief of evidence tendered to the court, the ATO claims that there were two distinct sets of frauds, one involving an entity known as Jet Street Legal Shine Pty Ltd, and a second through a series of entities which shared the title Oznet Broadband. The ATO says Stewart claimed the Jet Street entity operated a mobile car cleaning business and was involved in the distribution of bulk car cleaning chemicals. It is alleged that through that entity he made three false GST refund applications between April 28, 2003, and June 6, 2003.The matter was adjourned to November 9.
